Standard Pallet Size: From 48x40 to Global

Updated: Jun 27

What Are Pallets?

Pallets are platforms used to transport and store goods. Traditionally made of wood, they can also be constructed from plastic, paper, metal, or recycled materials. These flat structures act as a foundation for securely stacking and transporting various items. Goods are typically loaded neatly onto a pallet and secured with shrink wrap or strapping.

Before the widespread use of pallets in the 1930s, skids were the primary method for shipping goods. Similar to pallets, skids have a single flat surface for loading. However, pallets offer greater stability with a double-faced design, providing support from both the top and bottom.

Pallet Sizes: A Not-So-Standard Story

While a single, universal system for pallet sizing doesn't exist yet, some common sizes prevail depending on factors like location, region, and industry. Certain trade groups, like the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), advocate for specific dimensions based on their needs. The GMA, for instance, favors pallets measuring 40" x 48", which are now known as GMA pallets.

Pallets from NetZero Pallet also have the same dimension with GMA pallets.

Another key aspect beyond the physical size of a pallet is the maximum loading height. Similar to size, there's no universal standard for height, but many trucking companies impose restrictions. Generally, adhering to a maximum height of 72" ensures compatibility with most trucking height limitations.

ISO Pallet Sizes

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognized the need for some order in the world of pallets! To address the lack of a single global standard size, they developed a list of 6 approved pallet dimensions. These dimensions are now used in various countries around the world.

Pallet standard size and applications in North America

The world of pallets in North America is like a balancing act! While materials, industry, and specific needs can influence pallet sizes, there's a common standard that reigns supreme. The 40” x 48” GMA standard pallet is a true champion, accounting for a whopping 30% of all wooden pallets used for shipping in this region.

Are Standard Pallets the Best Size of Pallets?

Standard pallet sizes have been a game-changer for supply chains, bringing uniformity and efficiency. But are they the perfect fit for everyone? Let's explore the advantages and disadvantages to see if they're the best choice for your business.

Advantages of Standard Pallets

  • Global Citizens: Standard sizes make international trade a breeze. Shared dimensions across borders ensure smoother logistics.

  • Collaboration Champions: Uniformity simplifies things when working with partners and suppliers. Shipment planning and coordination become a walk in the park.

  • Warehouse Wizards: Sticking to standard sizes allows warehouses to optimize space, streamline workflow, and operate at peak efficiency.

Disadvantages of Standard Pallets

  • Flexibility Foes: Businesses with a diverse product mix or oddly shaped items might find standard sizes too rigid. A mix of standard and custom pallets might be a better fit.

  • Storage Specialists Needed: While standard sizes excel at maximizing general storage, some businesses with unique products may require specialized storage solutions.
